Who should look at this site?
This site was developed for college and university health services personnel, campus administration, and staff concerned with tobacco prevention. Students, parents, and faculty may also find the site useful.

Why should I be concerned about tobacco use on my campus?
College tobacco rates rose steadily through the 1990s. The college years are a time when many people either abandon or establish lifetime tobacco habits, and colleges provide an ideal setting for tobacco prevention interventions. Visit our College Tobacco Facts page to find out more about why college campuses are the new front line for tobacco prevention efforts.

We already have tobacco education programs on campus. Isn’t that enough?
Research indicates that tobacco education alone is insufficient. Most such programs focus on individual decision-making while failing to address the larger social and physical environment in which decisions about smoking are made. Visit our Comprehensive Prevention Model page to review model college tobacco prevention policies and find out how and why effective campus tobacco prevention combines traditional education and cessation approaches with environmental management strategies.

What are campuses around the country doing to address smoking?
U.S. campuses are on the move with respect to tobacco prevention. See our Campus Examples page for a series of case studies that document tobacco prevention efforts at colleges and universities nationwide.

What kinds of campus tobacco programs and policies should be put in place?
Every campus is unique. See our Comprehensive Prevention Model page for general policy and program guidelines. Review the case studies on our Campus Examples page for ideas, including the valuable tips from college tobacco prevention leaders.

There is so much to consider. How do I get started?
